Pricing and Medium Choices

Ball park pricing, which includes matting and framing, can be based on the
following:

· $7 per square inch for Colored Pencil

· $5 per square inch for Colored Pencil and Pastel combo (usually pastel
background and colored pencil figure)

· $3 per square inch for Pastel

The final figure may be adjusted slightly up or down depending on the
number of subjects (add 20% for each additional subject) and whether the
portrait depicts a partial or full figure view.

Once the details are agreed upon, I will send you a Portrait Commission
Contract listing the details and completion date. A holding deposit of 30%
is due at the time I begin the portrait with balance due upon delivery.
Once begun, completion of the portrait may take up to 2 months depending on
size. I generally have a wait list of 2 to 3 months for new commissions so
please keep this in mind if the portrait is to be a special occasion gift.

For more information you may call me at (206) 617-5447 or email.

Commisioning a Portrait

Commissioning a portrait of a loved one is a very special event. The
finished portrait is an expression of this love; a moment captured in time,
held near and dear for generations to come. As such, it’s advisable to
carefully consider important variables such as size, medium, setting and
content.

As I work almost exclusively from photographs, it is important to have
access to as many photos of the subject as possible in order to capture the
essence and spirit that you love so much. While I prefer to take my own
photos, I can also work from good quality photos that you may already have
available. Of course, if you are located outside of the Seattle area, that
is the only alternative and so the more photos you can send, the better. If
you will be taking your own photos of the subject, be sure to use good,
natural lighting, set your camera to the highest quality image and do not
use the flash.

Portraits of children and animals work best when the subject is dressed
comfortably, relaxed and engaged in a favorite activity or with a favorite
book or toy. A stiffly posed child dressed in a special occasion outfit is
generally not representative of who they really are. Also, the more shots
in each setting the better. On occasion, I have taken up to 100 shots of a
subject to get 6 or 7 really good reference photos: thank goodness for
digital cameras!

Once the reference photo is selected, I will meet with or call you to
discuss the portrait price, size and medium. Generally, the more subjects
in the portrait, the larger it should be to allow for sufficient detail.
Portrait size and price will also depend on medium (pastel or colored
pencil) and view (head and shoulders or full figure).

About the Artist

Maureen Mitchell is an award winning artist who has had a life-long
affinity for drawing and for drawing out the essence of her subjects. Born
and raised in the Chicago area, Maureen relocated to Seattle in 1975 where
she earned her BFA in Printmaking at University of Washington. During the
past five years she has focused primarily on commissioned children’s
portraiture and commissioned Alaska landscapes in pastel and colored
pencil. Maureen is a Signature Member of CPSA, Colored Pencil Society of
America,: her work has been influenced by favorite artists Degas, Hopper
and Wyeth.

Maureen’s nostalgic children’s portraits have a rare slice-of-life quality
of freshness, innocence and wonder. The artist loves to capture the beauty
of kids caught up in the simple moment of just being kids. In addition to
commission work the artist also experiments with a variety of media and
subject matter. Hauntingly beautiful still life scenes and block print
collages based on animal and plant forms are just a few examples of this
personal work.

While experimentation is integral to the progression of Maureen's work,
portraiture is the mainstay. "It is always a joy to begin a new portrait.
Capturing the essence of the subject in addition to a likeness, is 90% hard
work and 10% magic. There comes a moment during each portrait where I feel
the subject has truly come alive. That very gratifying experience is
complete, when, upon delivery, the recipient is just bowled over and very
often moved to tears. “

“I cannot imagine a greater reward for my talent and effort than that."
